What a Mobile Mechanic Can and Can't Fix in Your Driveway
By Gary Tantanella · Updated October 28, 2026
I spent a little over 30 years as an all-around Ford mechanic, then about 25 more as a robotics technician. One thing both jobs taught me: the right tool and the right setting matter as much as the skill. A mobile mechanic can do a surprising amount of work in a driveway, but not everything. Here's an honest rundown so you know what to ask for before you call anyone.
Usually fine in a driveway
- Batteries, starters and alternators. On most cars these are bolt-on parts. Florida heat is hard on batteries, so these are common calls.
- Brake pads and rotors. A standard brake job only needs a jack, stands and hand tools.
- Belts, hoses, thermostats and many radiator jobs.
- Check-engine diagnostics. A good scan tool travels just fine. Reading a code is the start of the job, not the answer.
- Oil changes, filters, wipers, bulbs, spark plugs on most engines.
- Pre-purchase inspections on a used car, done where the car is parked.
Usually needs a shop
- Engine or transmission removal. That takes a lift or hoist and a clean, covered floor.
- Wheel alignment. It needs an alignment rack. A mobile tech can replace tie rods or other parts, but you should still get the alignment done at a shop afterward.
- A/C recharge in some cases. Refrigerant must be recovered with proper equipment. Some mobile techs carry it and some don't, so ask.
- Major welding, frame or body work.
- Jobs that need the car up high for hours, like some clutch jobs or rear main seals.
Gray areas
Water pumps, timing belts, suspension struts and fuel pumps depend on the vehicle. On one car it's a two-hour driveway job. On another, it means pulling half the front end. Give the year, make, model and engine when you call, and an honest tech will tell you whether it can be done on site.
How to make a driveway repair go smoothly
- Park on a flat, firm surface. Concrete beats sand or grass, and shade helps in summer.
- Have the keys handy and clear room on both sides of the car.
- Write down the symptoms: when it happens, hot or cold, any noises or warning lights.
- Ask for a written estimate covering parts, labor and any trip fee before work starts.
- Check your HOA or community rules. Some don't allow repairs in the driveway.
Safety first
Never get under a car held up only by a jack. If the brakes feel soft, the steering pulls hard, or you smell fuel, don't drive it. Have it looked at where it sits.
